Prices flat as offering increases

The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) fell relatively flat this week, up only 2¢ to 1897¢ after price rises for Crossbred wool and Sydney fine merino offset losses across the rest of the table. The bale offering increased by 4,078 to 37,744 and so did pass in rates, increasing from 2.8% to 6.9%. This week 35,139 bales were sold which is up 7.4% on last week and 8.9% above the average over the past year of 32,258. The Australian dollar sits lower this week at 71.27¢ meaning that the EMI in US dollar (USD) terms fell overall by 6¢ to 1352¢.

Looking at local market indicators, Sydney was up by 10¢ to 1970¢, but Melbourne was down by 3¢ to 1849¢, and Fremantle was down by 11¢ to 2114¢.

In Sydney, as mentioned before fine merino saw broad gains with 17 MPG up 16¢ to 2642¢, 18 MPG up 17¢ to 2555¢ and 19 MPG being the only fine merino to decline, losing 2¢ to 2354¢. Losses were recorded for medium merino with 19.5 MPG down 5¢ to 2272¢ and 20 MPG down 19¢ to 2193¢. Crossbred wool was up with 26 MPG gaining 13¢ to 928¢ and 28 MPG up 27¢ to 732¢. Cardings were also up by 7¢ to 1116¢.

In Melbourne, fine and medium merino were down across the board, with 18 MPG down 13¢ to 2554¢, 19 MPG down 20¢ to 2349¢ and 20 MPG down by 32¢ to 2188¢. Crossbred wool was up with 26 MPG gaining 33¢ to 914¢ and cardings increased by 3¢ to 1108¢.

In Fremantle, fine merino 18 MPG gained 21¢ to 2533¢ however 19 MPG was down by 31¢ to 2321¢. Medium merino 20 MPG lost 33¢ to 2165¢ and cardings fell by 15¢ to 1107¢.

The week ahead….

This week the bale offering is estimated to decrease by 2.4% to 34,290 bales which is closer to being in line with the average bales sold in the past year of 32,722.

Auctions are scheduled for Tuesday only in Fremantle and Tuesday and Wednesday in Sydney and Melbourne.
