The Australian wool market concluded the final sale week of 2025 in unspectacular fashion. The Eastern Market Indicator finished the week at 1541¢/kg, down 1¢, while the EMI in US dollar terms closed at 1021¢, down 3¢, with the Australian dollar finishing the week at 66.25 US¢. A total of 35,563 bales were sold nationally, with the pass-in rate at 7.1%.

In Sydney, Merino fleece MPGs eased slightly, with the 17 MPG slipping 3¢ to 2188¢, the 18 MPG easing 5¢ to 2042¢/kg, and the 19 MPG falling 11¢ to 1982¢/kg. Crossbred fleece MPGs were lower, with the 26 MPG declining 12¢ to 742¢/kg, the 28 MPG falling 20¢ to 650¢/kg, and the 30 MPG easing 20¢ to 550¢/kg.

Melbourne recorded mixed results across Merino fleece MPGs, with the 18 MPG rising 7¢ to 2042¢ and the 19 MPG gaining 3¢ to 1969¢, while other Merino fleece MPGs recorded only minor movements. Crossbred fleece MPGs in Melbourne were lower in the broader categories, with the 30 MPG falling 15¢ to 575¢ and the 32 MPG easing 7¢ to 436¢.

Fremantle held a single selling day for the week and recorded modest gains across several Merino fleece MPGs, with the 18 MPG rising 11¢ to 2011¢ and the 19 MPG gaining 13¢ to 1899¢. Other Merino fleece MPGs recorded marginal movements. Crossbred fleece MPGs in the west recorded a limited change.

This week in Mecardo, Andrew Woods looked at the year that was in wool, (see article here). He showed that prices were largely flat through the first half of 2025 before lifting sharply during the September quarter, when Merino MPG prices rose by around 400¢. The 28 MPG crossbred was the standout, gaining approximately 300¢ over the same period. He noted that the strength in prices during this period stood in contrast to earlier months and was a defining feature of the 2025 season.

Next week

The wool market will now pause for the Christmas and New Year recess, with no sales scheduled over the next three weeks. Weekly wool comments will return when selling resumes in January. We wish all readers a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
